“Third-party tested” and “clean label” are useful only when a brand explains what sits behind the words. Neither phrase is one universal certification, and neither proves that a supplement works. UK shoppers should combine testing information with label accuracy, ingredient form, daily dose, purposeful supporting ingredients, manufacturing controls, suitability, realistic claims and the true cost per day.

- Identify the responsible business and seller.

- Check ingredient source and form.
- Ask what “third-party tested” covers.
- Distinguish raw-material from finished-product testing.
- Review the batch or certificate of analysis carefully.
- Understand what GMP does—and does not—mean.
- Check allergens, warnings and dietary suitability.
- Reject unauthorised medicinal or guaranteed claims.
- Calculate the true supply and cost per day.
Where “clean label” fits—and where it does not
Treat clean label as a prompt to inspect the formula, not as a substitute for the ingredient list. A transparent product should identify its active ingredients, state the amount provided by the complete daily serving and make functional ingredients easy to find.
A short ingredient list is not automatically a stronger formula. Capsules need a shell. Gummies need a stable texture. Effervescent tablets require ingredients that allow them to dissolve and taste acceptable. Powders may use flavouring, sweeteners or ingredients that improve consistency. These additions are not inherently a weakness when they have a clear purpose and are labelled openly.
The more useful questions are:
- Can you see exactly how much of each active is provided daily?
- Are flavourings, sweeteners, coatings, carriers and other functional ingredients disclosed?
- Does every added ingredient serve the intended format or formula?
- Is a proprietary blend preventing a fair comparison?
- Are “natural”, “pure” or “clean” claims distracting from a weak dose or incomplete label?
Clean presentation can make a product easier to understand. It cannot replace evidence, testing, allergen information, responsible warnings or a meaningful daily serving.
1. Identify the responsible business
A premium-looking website is not enough. Check whether the brand states who is responsible for the product, where the business is based and how customers can contact it. Marketplace listings deserve additional caution because the brand, importer and seller may be different organisations.
Current UK consumer guidance advises buying online only when you are confident the business is reputable and warns about counterfeit products, particularly when the price is unusually low.
2. Read the complete daily serving
Front-label numbers can refer to one capsule, a two-tablet serving, a scoop or a combined blend. Before comparing two products, establish:
- How many pieces or scoops make one daily serving?
- How much of each active is provided across that serving?
- How many complete days are in the pack?
- Does the website match the physical label?
A 60-count bottle may be a 60-day supply, a 30-day supply or less. Count is not the same as servings.
3. Check ingredient source and form
Ingredient names can hide important differences. Useful details include:
- Marine versus bovine collagen
- Creatine monohydrate versus an unspecified creatine blend
- Reduced versus S-Acetyl glutathione
- Direct NAD+ versus NR or NMN precursors
- Algae-derived versus fish-derived DHA
- Plant species, part used and extract standardisation
- Elemental mineral amount rather than compound weight
A source or form is not automatically superior, but it determines whether the evidence and dietary positioning are relevant.
4. Ask what “third-party tested” means
Third-party testing means an external laboratory has performed one or more tests. The phrase alone does not tell you:
- Which laboratory was used
- Whether it is appropriately accredited
- Which tests were performed
- Whether the sample was raw material or finished product
- Whether every batch or selected batches are tested
- What specification counted as a pass
A credible explanation may cover identity, potency, microbiology, heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, allergens or other contaminants relevant to the ingredient and format. Not every product requires the same panel.
5. Distinguish raw-material from finished-product testing
Raw-material testing can help confirm the identity and quality of an incoming ingredient. Finished-product testing assesses the completed capsule, tablet, gummy, softgel, drink or powder.
These answer different questions. A supplier certificate for one ingredient does not establish that the final product contains every active at the labelled amount or remains within specification throughout shelf life.
6. Read a certificate of analysis without over-interpreting it
A certificate of analysis, or COA, normally lists the sample, batch or lot, test method, specification, result and pass/fail status. Check that:
- The product or ingredient is clearly identified.
- The batch matches the product being discussed.
- The laboratory and report date are shown.
- Units are clear.
- Results are compared with a stated specification.
- The document has not been reduced to an unverifiable badge.
A COA can support quality assurance. It does not prove clinical effectiveness, superior absorption or customer outcomes.
7. Understand GMP properly
Good Manufacturing Practice is about controlled production: documented processes, hygiene, training, traceability, specifications, deviations and quality systems. GMP-focused manufacturing can reduce manufacturing risk, but it is not clinical proof and does not make every health claim valid.
Be cautious with loose phrases such as “GMP certified” when the brand does not explain who certified what, which facility is covered or which standard applies.
8. Check allergens, suitability and warnings
A strong label makes it easy to identify:
- Allergens and cross-contamination information
- Vegan or vegetarian suitability
- Fish, bovine, gelatine or algae sources
- Age restrictions
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding cautions
- Medication, surgery or medical-supervision warnings
- Maximum daily intake and storage instructions
A clean-looking front label is not a substitute for this information.
9. Reject medicinal and guaranteed claims
Food supplements are foods, not medicines. UK rules do not allow food to claim or imply that it treats, prevents or cures disease. Health claims also need to comply with the Great Britain nutrition and health claims framework.
Warning signs include:
- Claims to cure insomnia, anxiety or another health condition
- “Reverses ageing” or “detoxes the liver”
- Guaranteed skin, memory or weight-loss results
- Fixed timelines presented as certain
- Using one ingredient study as proof of the finished product
Strong commercial language can still be honest. A brand can explain the formula, dose, routine and evidence without turning a food supplement into an unlicensed medicine.
10. Calculate the real value
Price per bottle can be misleading. Calculate:
- Price per complete daily serving
- Amount of the main active per day
- Number of products needed to create the claimed routine
- Subscription or bundle conditions
- Whether the format improves consistency enough to justify the price
A cheaper product can be poor value when the serving is small or the label is vague. An expensive product is not automatically premium. - Contact the brand when authenticity is uncertain.
Do not consume a product with a damaged seal, altered label, unexplained smell, unusual appearance or unclear origin.

Does third-party tested mean clinically proven?
No. Laboratory quality testing and clinical efficacy research answer different questions.
Does clean label mean additive-free?
Not necessarily. Formats can require functional ingredients for stability, texture, flavour or dissolution. What matters is transparent labelling and a clear purpose for each addition.
Is a COA enough?
